Code Enforcement

The Village Police Department and the Building Department or Code Enforcement Officer(s) are responsible for investigating alleged private property violations of the Village Code and the Zoning Ordinance.

Nuisances

The Village, upon discovery of the nuisance condition, will attempt to make contact with the homeowner or occupant of the property and notify such person of the nuisance condition. The Village will provide the homeowner/occupant a period of time not less than seven days to abate the nuisance condition, unless the Village determines that the condition presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare, in which case, no abatement period is necessary.

Continued Issue

If the nuisance has not been abated by the homeowner/occupant by the conclusion of the abatement period, the Village may take such steps as shall be necessary to provide for the abatement of the nuisance, including cutting or trimming grass; cutting, trimming or removing weeds; trimming trees or bushes; and the removal of nuisance bushes or trees, along with the disposal of any materials so removed.

Notice in Mail

After the Village has provided for the abatement of the nuisance, the Village will send a notice to the person at the address on last year’s general property tax bill, including a description of the nuisance condition, the date on which the nuisance was abated, and the cost of abatement. Within 60 days of the abatement, The Village will take steps to record a sworn statement of lien against the affected property including such information as shall be required under the Illinois Compiled Statutes. A copy of the notice of lien will also be mailed to the homeowner. Any such lien will include all costs of the weed, brush trimming and removal, including any expense of the village or its staff in arranging for, or actually removing the brush, the expense of preparing and filing for a lien, and responding to inquiries regarding the same.
